<p><strong>One of the most beautiful areas in western North Carolina, Yancey County has its own distinctive and friendly mountain flavor.  This is the home of the highest mountain in the eastern U.S.&#8211;Mt. Mitchell, at 6684&#8242;. The Black Mountain range is the birthplace of two large and beautiful trout rivers&#8211;the South Toe and the Cane, which flow together with the North Toe to form the wild Nolichucky River, with exciting rapids for canoeing, rafting and kayaking.</strong></p>
<p><strong>But Yancey county is also home to an interesting and eclectic mix of mountain folk, both native and newcomers. A wide variety of artists and craftsmen live here. Asheville is about a 35 minute drive to the southwest. Interstate 26 is just 16 miles away, and getting closer, as Hwy 19 is presently being four-laned. The gorgeous Blue Ridge Parkway traverses the high ridges along the southern borders of the county.<br />

<p><strong>The land of Yancey county is a highly scenic mix of smaller farms, river valleys, and high forested slopes, a good percentage in National Forest ownership.  Burnsville is the county seat, an attractive, growing, yet low-key mountain town. </strong></p>
